By: Emma Mostajo

Meet Nomawethu Matiwana,

Nomawethu joined Inkululeko in 2020 during the pandemic as a classroom assistant. When the world was full of uncertainty, Nomawethu brought positivity and leadership into Inkululeko’s classrooms.

With a background of being a “qualified call center agent with supervision skills,” these skills allowed Nomawethu Matiwana to thrive as the Programs Director of the organization.

Shortly after, she began her role as the Program Director of Inkululeko. As the Program Director, Nomawethu leads “administrative tasks, oversees colleagues' work, manages financial responsibilities, provides opportunities for Inkululeko learners to be involved in the Social Enterprise, and works with learners to grow their business skills.” To make sure the program runs smoothly, Nomawethu recruits new learners into the program. The number of learners has increased significantly, and because of that, Inkululeko has been able to support more learners each year in pursuing their dreams. With the increase of learners within the program, Nomawethu is dedicated to making sure the program has enough resources to support the learners. To do this, Nomawethu manages specific financial responsibilities. By “helping with finances and recording transactions,” Nomawethu is able to see what is available to the learners to make sure their experience supports their goals.

Nomawethu has the experience and a background that has ‘“greatly impacted the work” she is doing for Inkululeko. With her experiences with the learners in Inkululeko, Nomawethu has learned the importance of making “good decisions regarding the future of” Inkululeko’s learners and leading a team who will do the same.
